30 years in Sistema Cheve System

The Sisterna Cheve System has been dye traced to a spring 2,700 meters making it possibly the world's deepest cave. Five and half days, 80 kms and 30 days underground. The cave, the dives, and the expedition in detail and pictures

Sistema Cheve has been dye traced to a spring 2,700 meters lower in elevation in the Sierra Juarez of northeastern Oaxaca, making it a strong contender for the world's deepest cave. A major breakthrough in 2021 extended the cave to more than 80 kilometers in length with the current limit of exploration at 5 and 1/2 days of hard travel from the nearest entrance. Single push underground stay times reached 30 days in 2021. Along the way numerous diving efforts have been involved, both OC and RB, at extremely remote locations. This talk will describe the cave, the dives, and expeditions planned for the coming years

High Altitude Fizziology

High Altitude Diving. Cousteau set the world high altitude dive record in 1968. Hear about the current record, popular altitude dive locations and the issues specific to high altitude diving. Covers 5,000 ft in Johannesburg, lakes in Colorado at 10,000ft and diving with the Bolivian Navy (14,400 ft). What does 30,300 ft in a hypobaric chamber feel like and get the low down on 4 high altutude lakes never dived by humans.

In this presentation, I will talk briefly about Cousteau setting the world high altitude dive record in 1968, the current world record, and popular altitude dive locations today. I’ll cover some issues specific to high altitude diving (compensation for incorrect depths, etc) then describe my own experiences: instructor course at 5,000 ft in Johannesburg, first diving experiment in Colorado, (in a lake at 10,000 ft), diving with the Bolivian Navy in Lake Titicaca (14,400 ft), and a NASA experiment where I went to 30,300 ft in a hypobaric chamber, which is 2,000 ft higher than Everest. Sweat was literally boiling off my legs as it came out of my pores. Finally, I will conclude by naming four pools and two lakes on earth above 19,400 fsl where no human is thought yet to have dived. Discovery awaits the brave!

Irish Shipwreck Exploration - A Diver's Guide

Exploring shipwrecks never discovered before. The challenges to finding them and the rewards from using 3D and Video to map their secrets

With the developments in technical diving training and equipment over the past 25 years, we are currently in the golden age of shipwreck exploration and discovery. Technical divers have an ever growing list of bucket-list dives but the fact remains, we still have only discovered and dived a fraction of these shipwrecks to date.

This presentation takes a practical view at what is involved in exploring shipwrecks which either have never been dived before or which have not been fully explored previously such as HMS Curacoa, HMS Hurst Castle, the sinking of HMS Justicia and the U-boats that attacked her. I aim to detail the various challenges involved in shipwreck exploration and the techniques used to capture these wrecks using both photography and videography techniques. The presentation will contain many underwater images and video, including the use of 3D photogrammetry and gives an insight into the rewards and challenges of photographing these iconic wrecks.

Learning from Unintended Outcomes: A framework to help learning after diving incidents and accidents

Unintended Outcomes: Learning and avoiding disasters and lawsuits in dive exploration and related activities.

There is currently no recognised framework from examining diving incidents and accidents to facilitate learning. The majority of adverse events are viewed from the perspective of law enforcement or litigation, neither of which helps with individual or organisational learning. This presentation will take best practice from high-risk industries and academia and propose a framework for use in diving incidents and accidents to facilitate individual and organisational learning using a number of case studies to show it can work.

Spider Crabs - Great Southern Reef wonders - solving mysteries behind one of the world's most iconic marine invertebrate aggregations

Every winter, in the heart of Port Phillip Bay and parts of the Great Southern Reef, a truly amazing natural phenomenon unravels: the gathering of thousands and thousands of great spider crabs. Those crabs come to the shallows together to seek safety in numbers and they are on a mission. In order to grow, they need to shed their hard shells and expand their soft flesh before hardening a new, bigger and shinier shell. Dodging hungry predators on the hunt for a soft crab at that time of year is tricky business – the best place to be is in the middle of a pile, protected by other crabs!

The spider crabs and their aggregations have been captivating people locally and internationally – Sir David Attenborough himself featured this natural wonder which happens nowhere else in the world in BBC Blue Planet II.

Would you believe that despite all this attention, we know very little about spider crab biology and ecology? Dr Elodie Camprasse and her team at Deakin University are here to change that and are using a mix of traditional and citizen science to study spider crab aggregations. Come hear what is being done to solve spider crab mysteries and how you can get involved in the research.

Dirty little secrets: What is happening (and should be happening) in response to decompression sickness among technical divers

Dirty little secrets: what is happening in response to decompression sickness among technical divers? Are divers with DCS symptoms self-treating, what are the outcomes?

Everyone knows the treatment for decompression sickness (DCS) is oxygen and recompression. But what is really happening out there in the technical diving community? Are divers with DCS symptoms self-treating, and what are the outcomes? Is it OK to self-treat some symptoms, how, and under what circumstances? What is the medical community's view of this? This presentation will address these questions and other related topics.

Interventions in Tunnel Boring Machines: Designing the most difficult decompression tables

Diving interventions in tunnel boring machines, the world's most difficult decompression tables. Tunnel boring machines have to pressurise their cutting chamber to avoid water flooding when digging under rivers or seas. Workers enter the machine under pressure, in extreme heat, covered in mud and hydraulic oil. This unique environment makes generating dive tables for safe working a challenging task.

The tunnelling industry is developing around the world, as all the giant metropoles suffer from congestion and need tunnels for metro and highways. Tunnel boring machines have to pressurise their cutting chamber to avoid water flooding when digging under rivers or seas. When maintenance is required, workers enter the machine under pressure and need decompression procedures. Two options are available, bounce diving and saturation diving, but because of the costs, operators tend to push mixed gas bounce interventions to the equivalent of 60 msw. Tunnel tables are the most difficult tables to design. The work is intense, the heat is extreme, the environment is just mud and hydraulic oil but still the operation requires one to two hours continuous bottom time to perform useful work. The presentation details the various recipes (trimix specification, double gas switches, massive oxygen dose management,) and mathematical tools used to design such tables.

A Tale of Liners & Battleships - RMS Lusitania & HMS Audacious

From the Cunard Liner R.M.S. Lusitania to the famous sinking of the dreadnaught class, H.M.S. Audacious. A tale of liners and battleships

The waters surrounding the coast of Ireland were the scene of some of the most significant maritime losses during both World Wars. The concentration of convoys coming from North America to the United Kingdom were a primary target for the German Navy, which has left an indelible mark on the underwater landscape around the Irish coastline. The presentation will focus on two of these war losses.

First, Cunard Liner R.M.S. Lusitania, who's sinking caused a storm of protest in the United States as a result of 128 American citizens being among the dead. The sinking helped shift public opinion in the United States against Germany, and was a factor in the United States' declaration of war nearly two years later.

The second, the sinking of H.M.S. Audacious which was the last King George V-class dreadnought battleship built for the Royal Navy in the early 1910s.

Recent Advances in Autonomous Unmanned Cave Diving

NASA funding, robotic systems and Recent Advances in Autonomous Unmanned Cave Diving including the 2019 autonomous underwater territory mapping in Namibia. Bill Stone covers the development history of SUNFISH and the upcoming robotic cave diving missions.

During the past 20 years, under NASA funding for the development of robotic systems for the exploration of sub-surface oceans of the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, Stone Aerospace has developed and fielded four generations of autonomous underwater vehicles. The 4th-generation machine, SUNFISH, is a 6-degree-of-freedom hovering device that operates on more than 400,000 lines of AI behavior-based code. It creates 3D maps of the world around it and decides on its own where to explore. In 2019 it became the first autonomous system to explore completely unknown subterranean underwater territory, on its own, in Namibia. This talk will review the development history of SUNFISH, the work in Namibia, and upcoming robotic cave diving missions.

Tech Diving & DAN

The 1970' the oil crisis heightened the US's need to explore further offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, involving deeper diving, meaning they needed experts on-call for the injuries they anticipated. That's right, DAN was literally born from deep mixed-gas diving. The founder of DAN, the late Dr Peter Bennett, had a rich history of deep experimental diving, eventually setting a (then) world record 686m trimix dive at Duke University. Since then DAN has kept pace with the growth of tech diving, in the 90's contributing articles to AquaCorps where the name “tech diving” was first coined, and sponsoring workshops on the remote management of DCS, Rebreather Forum 3, the Technical Diving Workshop, the PFO workshop and more, most recently publishing a study into caustic cocktail events. This presentation will showcase forty years of DAN's involvement in the topics that are of high interest to tech divers.

Should technical divers be conducting in-water recompression?

There are few diving medical topics more controversial than in-water recompression. The medical community is dismissive. Does it really make a difference? A review on where we are now and what needs to happen next.

There are few diving medical topics more controversial than in-water recompression to treat decompression sickness. The medical community has typically been dismissive of the idea, partly because of the lack of definitive answers to two pivotal questions: 1. does very early recompression really make a difference? 2. do shorter shallower recompressions than can be performed in a chamber actually work? Recent work has provided answers. These answers, combined with the fact that technical divers operate in very remote locations and have a skill set that makes in water recompression less risky, have compelled the medical community to reconsider this issue. This presentation will review where we are now.

The area is desolate, making the logistics, permits and safety a challenge that has to be overcome to reach the expedition objectives. This talk will share these challenges and shed light on the expedition, the area and the international team involved.

The history of the area (untravelled). Robins discovery of the system and the local interest/use of the water. Rannnva and my history together and our passion for caves and aquifers (and the importance of this aquifer in particularly, locally and internationally).

  • The planning of the expedition - Why and how.
  • The goals (scientifically, culturally + UNESCO Geopark application process).
  • The cooperations (Indonesian government & University faculties). What do they need and how will we provide this.
  • The dive team - who are they and what are their roles - making the A-team of highly experienced people and their responsibilities was vital, it is not easy diving.
  • The dry team - speleologists mapping and exploring the 2 massive dry chambers, hoping for connections to water.
  • The logistical challenges (heavy) - everyone are trained in Mexico on Sidewinder + scooters prior to project, all is shipped to Indo in containers. Permits are heavy. The list is long.
  • The media interest - History channel, HBO + 2 different producers (pros and cons of having a documentary created).
  • And hopefully finishing with revealing that the expedition is both a flag expedition (we are awaiting approval) and who the main sponsor is.
